Freshening up

by nicole

Hey everyone. I had a little spruce up today. Changed my header image for the first time ever and my colour scheme. I did consider going to a new theme but I still haven’t found one I like quite as much as this.

What do you think? Yes? No? Maybe?

I love the background colour but am unsure if it’s a bit hard on the eyes reading and I do dislike the way the little facebook widget looks like a white box. Hmmmm. I may go back to a white background. But will see …

Just thought I would share this happy accident. This is what happens when you get integral film stuck in an sx70 and then proceed to try to rip it out but can’t, then someone else does.

Hehe … i kinda like it though!

jammed!

by nicole

On Saturday I went and saw the amazing film Journal de France, which was on as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. I was so to shoot both by it and being around some fellow polaroid photographers.

So I took some polas.

With mixed results.

it is a truth universally acknowedged …

that if you have a football team you are surely, at least becoming, melburnian. i never thought it would happen to me. born in brisbane, as a teenager i enthusiastically followed the nrl on tv when the broncos or queensland were playing and still scream at the tv when state of origin is on. but i never ever felt the compulsion to attend a game.

living in sydney for 8 years i was still a die hard queensland supporter but said that the south sydney rabbitohs were my team. but that was more of a tribal sydney suburb thing rather than a sports fan thing as, again, i never went to a game and didn’t even watch one on telly.

i saw one or two afl games in my time, including the thrilling lions vs essendon grand final in 2001 at some pub in the heart of fitzroy. but then i went back home and never looked at afl again.

two years ago i moved to melbourne. my boyfriend’s family are carlton supporters (except for one who inexplicably barracks for north melbourne). and so i went along with them to a game at the mcg on freezing winter’s night last year.

now i have carlton socks …

a carlton scarf (official – not $2 shop) …

i’m about to get a carlton jacket

i know the words to the carlton song

sorry lions … i don’t know how it happened.

altogether now:

we are the mighty navy blues …

We are the Navy Blues,
We are the old dark Navy Blues,
We’re the team that never lets you down,
We’re the only team old Carlton knows,
With all the champions they like to send us,
We’ll keep our end up.

And they will know that they’ve been playing
Against the famous old dark Blues

romance

domain

this is my third winter living in melbourne and this year was the first one where i didn’t spend the whole three months griping about how much i hated the cold and dark (i did a little bit but not the whole time). the first two winters i found majorly depressing. this year i’ve quite enjoyed it and think either winter here was warmer, or i’m acclimatising. i’m rediscovering my love of melbourne winters engendered by 17 years of visiting my aunt here in winter – at a time i lived in sunnier climes and though wearing winter coats and boots was the best!

chris and i did couple things on a lovely melbourne winter’s day a few weeks ago (sounds like an oxymoron i know!) we explored south melbourne and ate chinese, and walked around the domain and botanic gardens – places i sadly have not been for years. it was lovely and romantic. it was also fun romping around on the stage at the myer music bowl. i can’t believe they just let you do that!

the afternoon winter light was gorgeous in the domain and it was perfect for some pola shots. i feel like the pinkness of the px70 push was just perfect for capturing the cold southern winter light and the beautiful shadows it produces, even early in the afternoon.

i’m back

by nicole

it’s been a long time, been a long time
been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
yes, it has

i’ve sorrowfully neglected you dear readers! but i’ve been busily doing other things! like recovering from a bike accident, spending time with my parents, getting accepted into a phd, going to a conference in launceston, reading novels, doing kung fu and having a break before starting said phd on monday (and many other things). i’ve taken some photos – a few rolls here and there, which will probably get developed in the next year or so.

i’ve had some fun with the px70 push that was sitting in my fridge for months! i really like the results of the film. i don’t find it that tricky but you do need to love the pink. i think that if it was warmer it would be less pink but it’s pretty cold here this time of year. hope you like these six that i’ve shot over the last month on lovely crisp clear melbourne days.
